How to format headings in APA Heading Levelįlush Left, Bold, Italic, Title Case Heading
Most students will not need to use more than three levels of headings. If your introduction is longer than a paragraph, you can add additional headings, starting with level 2. The title of your paper acts as the first heading, at level 1. Do not use the word "Introduction" as a heading. Start each new section with a level 1 heading. Do not add extra blank lines above or below headings. Headings should be written in title case (capitalize the first word and all words longer than four words). Headings should succinctly describe that section's contents. Headings should not be lettered or numbered. Regardless of whether or not you have to use headings, the text of your paper will begin with your paper's title in the level one position. Headings help keep long APA papers organized.
